In the Monchique Hills, 2700 feet above sea level, Algarve, Portugal,
lost in the middle of a rich native forest, a village with under 100
inhabitants boasts an unusual "handmade" private museum
entitled "Spirit of Wood".
![]() In this museum, pieces of wood taken from fallen trees are frozen during two or three years and transformed in art pieces using from axes to high precision dentist`s tools, without the embelishment of any type of paint. These works are shown to hundreds of visitors who come from countries as far apart as New Zealand, Brazil and South Africa. This image shows a piece carved from "Pistacea lentiscus" after three years in a freezer and two hundred hours of carving.
